Big thanks to Sing for Hope and artist Elena Iosilevich for the beautiful painted piano that's now in one of our music classrooms! Today we were lucky enough to have Ms. Iosilevich as well as singer-songwriter Julienne Dweck visit WHEELS for a Sing for Hope artist assembly.

Congratulations to all of our seniors for applying to college and our band students for performing at our annual College March last Friday!


Congratulations to all of our middle grades students that received awards and our band students that performed at our middle grades awards assembly last Thursday!


Thank you to the Jazz Foundation of America for bringing pianist Bertha Hope, bassist David Colding, drummer Lucianna Padmore, and singer Antoinette Montague to perform and teach music history to WHEELS 6th graders! It's such a blessing to have world-class performers visit WHEELS and inspire us to be better musicians and people.

Thank you to Sarah Elizabeth Charles, Jordan Peters and Harlem Stage for an incredible afternoon of music today. In addition to performing for WHEELS students, Ms. Charles and Mr. Peters engaged the students in conversation about themes like home and belonging, and improvised music with them!



Thank you to ICEBERG New Music for visiting WHEELS today to present their compositions to our third and fourth graders (the next generation of composers)!
We're very proud of our Pre-K through 4th grade students that performed and displayed work at yesterday's Winter Arts Showcase! Thank you to all the families and members of our community that came out to support our students!

Congratulations to the WHEELS band students that performed at the 2018 Johnny Pacheco Latin Music and Jazz Festival at Lehman College! They played new arrangements of Ivan Lins' "She Walks This Earth" and Charlie Parker's "Billie's Bounce." Thank you to Dr. Kurt Gartner for excellent feedback! WHEELS students and families got to see Orpheus Chamber Orchestra perform at Carnegie Hall last night! They also got to try playing some of the instruments in the orchestra.

WHEELS middle grades students had the honor of being invited to see Orpheus Chamber Orchestra rehearse with Avi Avital (mandolin) and Ksenija Sidorova (accordion) last Friday. The students got to meet the musicians and learn about how they work together. We're looking forward to seeing Orpheus perform at Carnegie Hall next week!

Thank you to Orpheus for bringing a string quartet to WHEELS to perform for and play with one of our sixth grade general music classes! The musicians also demonstrated their rehearsal process and led an in-depth discussion about teamwork and leadership with the students.

So proud of the WHEELS students that performed today at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem as part of the Jazz Power Initiative! They sang and danced original jazz music and standards with an all-star professional band! They have another performance on Tuesday evening at the United Palace.

Thank you to Inwood Art Works Culture Hub for including WHEELS students alongside professional musicians in the Inwood Music Festival!



Thank you to Luke Folger (a.k.a. Unigen) for visiting WHEELS last week and working with 3rd and 7th grade music students! He showed us how he composes and improvises using loops. He even recorded the 3rd graders playing various instruments, and then improvised using samples from those recordings.
